Brighton home remodel

Camberwell complete building refurb and interior design

A modest financial investment completely transformed and maximized the living space in this property. Originally, it was a 3-bedroom house with a small kitchen and two bathrooms. 

After undergoing a complete refurbishment, including new electrical wiring, central heating, and plumbing systems, the property was transformed into a spacious 4 to 5 double-bedroom family home. It features a large open-plan kitchen, a downstairs cloakroom, a loft play/cinema room, a garden office, and a self-contained studio annexe (5th bedroom). These improvements were made without extending the property or requiring structural work.

The remodelling changes included:
- Complete rewiring, plumbing, and re-plastering.
- Fitting a new kitchen in the front double reception room to create a large open-plan kitchen diner for family life.
- Moving an internal doorway to convert an en-suite bathroom into a family bathroom.
- Installing a functional staircase to the loft, insulating and chip-boarding walls and floors, and making the space accessible and usable.
- Creating a studio annexe in the room that used to be the kitchen.
- Installing a second front door to provide separate access to the studio annexe.
- Adding a downstairs toilet under the stairs.
- Creating new access to the cellar through a bespoke built and seamless hatch door in the hallway floor.
- Removing mature bamboo in the front garden and landscaping the outdoor space with reclaimed cobblestones, a white wooden picket fence, and greenery consisting of lavender, rosemary, peonies, bulbs, red robins, as well as olive and magnolia trees.
- Designing and installing a bespoke garden office pod to combine home working with family life optimally.

The home was decorated using environmentally friendly products. Each room had personal touches, like patterned tiles, reclaimed tongue-and-groove oak board cladding, individually painted original floorboards in the children's bedroom, half-painted exposed brickwork, cork wall coverage, and gold mosaic tiles on the ceiling of the newly added ground-floor cloakroom.

The central double reception rooms in this home feature a bright kitchen with a large bay window seat and a nearby atmospheric dining and living room with original French doors leading to the garden.

The impressive staircase needed a complete refurbishment when the property was purchased. This provided an opportunity to make a statement by restoring the original wooden handrail and iron spindle, stripping and oiling the wooden steps with wood wax, and painting the walls in striking Farrow & Ball India Yellow and Wevet.

This bustling urban area also enjoyed completely transformed outdoor space at the back and the front. Invasive plants were carefully removed, and a previously unremarkable corner was transformed into an impressive and stylish entertaining area. The space now features pergolas, swings, hammocks, and beautiful climbing flower bushes such as jasmine, clematis, and wisteria.


Camberwell overhaul and remodel with added living space

Bellenden Road basement refurb and ground floor interior redesign

Creation of home office and cellar space in the basement.

Our clients came to us as a cry for help after an unfortunate experience with previous building contractors. The brief was to create a bright working space in an existing basement that had suffered condensation and  damp issues, because of lack of ventilation.

A new opening was made to the ground floor so that an accessible staircase could be fitted and airflow enhanced.  The challenges in this project also included repair ing the wet underfloor heating system (damaged during unsuccessful previous building works). 

We sourced all material for this project, including :
- Eco vinyl flooring
- Acrylic wall panelling
- Gold mosaic tiles
- Gold wall lights
- Gold flash round ceiling lights
- Marine grade plywood for bespoke shelves, wine cellar counter top and boxing up of the pipe work.

We also designed the electrical plan, for optimum use of this new and trendy flexible work and play space, which ended up being a fantastic addition to this already very cool home.

Peckham basement refurb

Brockley South London - Entire home refurb

This two bedroom property had been divided for rental. The kitchen was lacking natural light, access to garden and was affected with damp. It was perfect as our client had instructed us to find a house to renovate, improve and transform into a small but mighty family home.

A complete overhaul gave this Victorian terrace the love it was begging for. The loft was insulated, the ground floor was weather proofed and the electrics as well as the heating and plumbing were upgraded to reach energy efficiency.

Some of the work :
- Original features restoration : floorboards, fireplaces, sash windows at the front.
- Damp proofing : fixing leakages, damp course on wall throughout ground floor. 
- Light and access : new french widows and large side window in the kitchen. Enlarged doorway between kitchen and dining with hexagonal tiling as transition connecting the spaces.
- Storage: Lots of. Under stair bespoke carpentry pantry,  new loft access with ladder, floor boarding and functional open and closed shelving, shelves in dining, living and bedrooms.
- Remodel of first floor to provide two double bedrooms, with yoga hammock and meditation space, a family bathroom (shower over bath) with utility corner. 
- Remodel of ground floor : front reception as home office, hobby and media room, dining room to entertain and connected to kitchen as the heart of the home for keen home cooking (American fridge freezer, range master cooker, large pantry, access garden BBQ grill).
- Style and colour schemed suggested by The Place Between based on conversations and style exploration with our client. A seamless continuous and slick feel was achieved with anchoring black woodwork, windows and doors, accent lighting and tiling, light neutrals and brass touches. 
- All products used in this home met thorough eco-friendly credentials.

Nunhead - 4 bed Victorian full refurb

An amazing project that completely transformed a cluttered property that had been well maintained in its structure but neglected in design. Over the years, the many modification had caused this Victorian beauty to loose all it's charm under wall to wall carpets, art deco chimney coverings, oil based old fashion paint, basic and overly used tiling and linoleum flooring. All of it was screaming to be removed and uplifted.

The work was done simply and in an eco-friendly manner. The dark and windowless middle room recovered light and meaning when the dividing wall was opened and the kitchen was moved in it. A bespoke island was fitted and space was made in the chimney for the stove and the extractor fan. The rest of the cupboards were a mix of stainless fitted and wooden painted free standing. The heart of the home was animated again with this magnificent open plan cooking and dining space.

A utility room was created, and was was the kitchen became an impressive high ceiling sitting room connected to the garden. 

The interior design theme highlighted restored ad exposed brickwork, reclaimed chimney mantlepieces and internal pine doors, reclaimed floorboards for the loft and restored original floors and stairs. The previous owners could simply not believe the transformation. This house sold 18 months after the refurb, having gained 40% increase in sale price. Three competing bidding offers came in the final run to try to grab this appealing family home.

Playroom basement conversion

Creation of studio with own front door in South London Victorian terrace

The Place Between completely remodelled this Camberwell property, which was purchased as a 3 bed victorian terrace with bags of potential in 2016 and sold as a 4 to 5 bed in 2021, without extending the property. As part of the overhaul, a new kitchen was fitted the front of the property, in the double reception, leaving an ideal space to create a studio annex with renting potential in the space that originally hosted a small kitchen with utility. 

An additional front door was put in, along with a kitchenette and a shower room. This made the property a flexible space, as the studio could either be used as self contained or as another reception room/ 5th bedroom with en-suite. 

Gorgeous patterned tiles made the kitchen corner stand out, and the shower was tiled with duck egg blue brick. 

The original brick walls were exposed as a feature and painted 'parker grey' (a neutral dark tone from the long lasting and generous coverage wall paint in Lakeland Organic collection). 

This brick separation was also the ideal existing sound buffer, and the other walls were topped with soundproofing decorative cork wall covering, for extra cosiness and style. The material used was sustainable 3 mm cork roll as wallpaper, which provided a soft sound barrier and a warm atmosphere to the room. 

Between 2017 and 2020, this stunning space hosted short and long term lodgers, and the rental income was over £1000 per month. Renovating the space added tremendous value and appeal to the property.

Outbuilding makeover and garden landscaping

This generous garden on the sunny South coast of England benefitted from a sound but aged outbuilding, connected to electricity and water. A recessed area at the very bottom of the garden had tremendous potential but had been neglected and was not very inviting. 

This project aimed at making both the building and the recessed area inviting and functional spaces. The place between redesigned the building so it could be used an an office and a yoga studio. We fitted cork flooring, a carbon negative material, to give warmth and cosiness to the place. Dysfunctional white pvc windows and french doors were replaced with black aluminium slim windows and doors and an additional single door was fitted at the back to connect with a newly paved area leading to the sunken garden at the bottom. 

Astral circle paving feature and a plant climbers archway are part of the design, along with sleepers planters galore, to grow vegetables and flowers. A pergola to host (all ages appropriate) swings and hammock chairs have also been provided for. A perfect fire pit spot has also been created. 

As this is a substantial space, we find that making a story with it is possible through the creation of different sections or areas for relaxing and enjoying the sun and the sea air.
